Your latest testcase does indeed trigger a bug, which is in fact a
regression relative to 4.2.x

I'll hold off on the other patch until I have understood the story
entirely and then I will submit the composite patch to the list.

In the mean time, would you please submit a bug report to Bugzilla?
It is very helpful to us if you do this.
