Without the -static switch (using gfortran), I get:
  
/usr/local/gcc-4.2/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/4.2.3/../../../../lib64/libgfortran.so: file not recognized: File format not recognized
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
 
There is a libgfortran.a file in the same lib directory, by the way.  I don't
understand the difference between the *.a and *.so libraries.
