David,

I am testing a patch at this very moment.  Here it is attached.  Do you have 
time to test it?  I have not tested on ppc or any other platform except x86-64 
(let alone mips).  There is also a partial patch here:

I am hoping the attached improves on the one in the PR. BTW this patch appears 
to fix pr34540 as well. (That was the goal anyway)
