gcc4.1.2 gfortran patches...

Hello, All,
   My name is Mike McCracken, and I am a physics graduate student at 
Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, US.  We recently upgraded our 
computing facilities to a 64-bit build of LinuxRHEL5, which includes gcc 
4.1.2.  While trying to build some of our old analysis software which uses 
Fortran, I was stymied by the absence of LSHIFT and other intrinsics in 
our not-so-recent version of gfortran.
   After a large amount of google searching, I have come to the conclusion 
that using some of the gfortran patches (found in the message here: 
http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/fortran/2006-07/msg00397.html) will be the easiest 
solution for me.  My only problem is that I'm such a Fortran dunce that I 
don't really know where/how to implement these.
   Is there anyone out there who can poin me in the right direction?  Is 
there an easier/less intrusive way to fix this?  I know that a newer 
gfortran will have these, but I am hesitant to go with a completely 
different gcc as our system seems to be pretty stable. Thanks in advance.
