My university still has a substantial RHEL4 installed base, which 
includes my own desktop machine.  RHEL4 is glibc 2.4, so if you can 
build that way without too much trouble, I would be interested in 
installing it (but don't bother if it would be a bother).  The most 
recent time I tried the binaries, they required 2.6.

Unfortunately, I was not able to build from trunk due to PR37888, which 
has still not been directly addressed (and I haven't tried again to see 
if it's gone away).
