thanks for it.
My comments follow.
It would be nice to answer the questions asked in your XXX comments
before committing (apart the last one).

About signal, I found no example in the testsuite.
About -fno-dump-core, I don't know either
About -fdefault-*-8, It's being already discussed in Dominique's thread
:(
