An update: if I change the order of the USE statements in the subroutine
header, the error message goes away. So, unless I'm badly wrong, it is a
bug, since the ambiguity of a data type should not depend on the order
in which the relevant modules are USEd (or so I understand).
I have now begun the (long and tedious) task of pulling out a test case;
as soon as I'm done I'll post a PR.
