One step at a time is fine. If Tom thinks it's suitable, it should go in.
Don't forget to update the docs, they specifially mention at one place or
another that fortran comments are not honoured.

I'm not sure what you reference her?! Something like
#define shortname some_really_long_and_verbose_expansion
? The long expansion will be parsed and "falls off" the line after the 72
character. Probably, the parser will spit an error, will it be obvious what's
wrong?
