Buffered/unbuffered I/O issues

for programs running in the background or batch I find it
very convenient to have unbuffered stdout (and stderr).
It would be quite inconvenient to clutter up a large program
with flush statements just for informational output.
Something like GFORTRAN_UNBUFFERED_STDIO would be perfect.
