Beware the additional space, which was probably not intended.  You would 
want to do e.g. (my personal preference)

WRITE(*,*) 'Why does gfortran not&
      & like me?'

(note the absence of a space leading into the ampersand on the continued 
line, you could also put the space there and omit it on the continuation 
line)
