g77 certainly didn't support this "extension," so it is not a 
"regression."  Not
long ago, ifort didn't support it either, so I'm fairly certain it was 
introduced
in response to customer feature requests.  In the gnu tradition, you 
could say
"patches welcome," subject to the usual hurdles of copyright assignment 
et al.
