regression with pr32417.f90

hi all,

i checked out a fresh copy of trunk/ this morning to fix a bug (32579). 
it successfully bootstrapped on x86 linux but i'm seeing a regression:

FAIL: gfortran.fortran-torture/compile/pr32417.f90,  "-O"   (internal 
compiler error)

gfortran.log reports the following for pr32417.f90:

compiler exited with status 1

my changes are localized to fortran/symbol.c and appear unrelated to the 
regression.
