Thanks. I'll see if I can learn something.  I'll try and reproduce the 
problem with some simple code (my code is 10000 lines excluding the 
PETSc code). It may take a little while because I'm not sure if the 
problem lies in linking with PETSc or not.  Do you know of anyone using 
PETSc and gfortran on PowerPC arcitectures?
