This patch is a couple of minor things that didn't fit into the other 
patches; it should be self-explanatory.  (I'm presuming that '*' is 
erroneous -- it doesn't seem to be a footnote to anything, and the most 
plausible explanation is that it's a @* linebreak command that got 
munged somewhere along the line.)

Tested with "make pdf" and "make texi"; committed to trunk as obvious.
