Well, the gfortran binaries should also come with an ar.exe (and an
as.exe; both are in the same directory as ld.exe). Do they also
disappear?
And, finally, I don't think there is a ld.exe on Windows (unless you
have another compiler installed), neither can I see how it could play
a role.

That seems more likely to me: if you disable it, does that fix the
problem? If you look into its logs, is there any mention of ld.exe?
