I have had zero time to do anything on it, other than to conclude that 
the memory usage by the frontend is trivial, compared with that 
associated with any level of optimization.

I'll see what can be done with  "Formal/actual argument checking for 
same file procedures".  Jerry offered to give me a hand with this 
project, which would be very welcome because I am short of time even to 
do the bug fixes that I am pursuing.  Saying that, I am worried that 
this is going to be a bit too big and intrusive to do on that 
timescale.  I'll get in touch with Jerry and we'll generate an opinion 
about whether this should not slide into 4.4.
