Just as an afterthought,

  INTEGER, DIMENSION(), POINTER :: p
  p => null()
  WRITE(*,*) size(p), lbound(p), ubound(p)

should print "0, X, X", where is X something reasonable.

gfortran:
           1           1 -1076029184
ifort
           0           1           0

So, the problem might not be the ELEMENTAL function at all?
