I missed one item that came up.

6) Environmental variables.  At one time gfortran frowned on the
   use of environmental variables (EV).  In the discussion, I 
   think we came to the conclusion the EVs are sometimes useful
   and should be used with some amount of discretion.  FX mentioned
   that and EV amy be useful for a backtrace feature that Tobias
   has been thinking about.  (Yes, I ended a sentence with about.
   Dang, I did it, again.)
