force write in Gfortran

?? I don't see how that could happen, but then I've been wrong before
too. Perhaps, there is code in the rest of the program that closes
and/or reopens the unit with different flags?

Umm, ok. Can you test whether your problem occurs on 4.1 or trunk as
well? 4.0 is old, buggy, and noone is working on improving it anymore
(sorry, we don't have infinite resources).

Or if you don't want to go through the trouble of installing 4.1
(which I heartily recommend if you're serious about using gfortran),
I'll repeat my suggestion to post the code, or even better a
self-contained snippet (keeping in mind copyright etc.), so that
someone else might be able to test it.
