I'm neither happy nor unhappy with the compromise.
But, it is rather dumb (IMHO) to be married to a 2 GB
data file without jumping through hoops when we get
a 2**64 data file with the native gfortran 8 byte
record marker. Have you ask Intel to support larger
files via a 8 byte marker? Intel does market a
64-bit processor.
