I've only quickly scanned the patch, so this isn't a 
comment on its technical merit.  Thomas and Bud Davis
are probably better suited for reviewer; however, I
review the patch as promised.

The length and number of files touched will require
the FSF paperwork.  Yes, it's a pain in the butt, 
because snail mail is used.  On the bright side, any
additional patches you submit will be cleared for
possible inclusion in the source tree.
