Extra swapping when using gfortran 4.3-20061224 vs gfortran 4.2-20061211

Thomas' 2006-12-01 commit is in the 4.2 branch.  So I don't think thats it.

Toon, can you revert Thomas' 2006-12-06 patch in 4.3 and try that to see what 
happens?
