Fortunately, it's not quite as bad as that.  Between gcc3.x.x and
gcc4.y.y is a complete rebuild of the inner workings. g77 was already
unsupported, so there was nobody to do the necessary work, and gfortran
was in gestation.  Thus, the decision was taken to incorporate gfortran
in gcc.

Fedora takes the gcc releases for incorporation in their distributions;
as do the other Linux distributors.  The releases tend to be a few
months to half a year behind the development version.  You can find more
or less up to date binaries on the gfortran wiki.

I think that you will very likely need to change non-standard features
in your code.  Whilst we are trying to incoporate as much of g77's
non-standardness as seems bearable, most of our effort is going into
making gfortran a standard conforming F95 compiler and to include as
much of F2003 as possible/desirable/as we are able to do.

If you think that you have found bugs in gfortran, reduce them and mail
them to this list or, better still, post them to Bugzilla.  This wa, you
help us as well as yourself.
