If you depend on non-standard backslash handling, the language you're  
using is not Fortran.  Nevertheless, you may want to read the  
documentation of the -fno-backslash option, which may be what you  
need.  If you're trying to report a bug, please give more details.

g77 is available from all GNU mirror sites.

You should direct your criticism towards:
A) your system operator for removing g77 from your installation
B) Fedora for no longer including g77 (if they did indeed drop it,  
which I didn't check)
C) the programmer of the code you're using for relying on non-standard  
features which are of little to no use
