I/O slow (buffered?) ; can I change this?

BINGO! That's it.
So it was not the tail command, as I verified that
the file was just empty for long time. Hence, it's
the (too long) buffering by Gfortran that causes
this behaviour.

How could I have learned about this myself?
I can't find this in the manual pages....
