I/O slow (buffered?) ; can I change this?

I looked at man page of gfortran, searched for the
keyword 'buffer', io (too many hits...) and I/O, but
that did not give me any clue.
But also "BUFFER" does give a hit (neither in
gfortran, nor in gcc man page.....so what Runtime
variable do you mean?
