For future reference, next time any of you get stuck on a bug like this, 
feel free to ping me for help rather than spending an hour on it -- I do 
a fair bit of tex work, and this kind of immediate-feedback debugging is 
a nice break from dissertation research that nobody else will know or 
care about for months.  :)

And, Daniel, I second the thanks for all the work that went into your 
improvements to the documentation.
