Compiler error

I am getting this error attempting to compile anything with gfortan
under Cygwin:-

<built-in>:0: internal compiler error: Illegal instruction
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.

There was some discussion of this earlier in the year which appeared to
be saying that it indicated the hardware was wrong for the particular
download. I downloaded:-

gfortran-4.2-Cygwin-i686.tar

gfortran --version

gives:-

GNU Fortran 95 (GCC) 4.2.0 20060601 (experimental)
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

The computer is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 laptop running Windows 2000. 
It has an Intel compiler. Are the binaries I have downloaded incompatable 
with this machine? It is of course quite old now - bought November 2001.

My interest in gfortran is to compile various quantum chemistry codes
that are written in f77, particularly now g77 is no longer in many
distros. I had other problems on linux but I need to look at these
again. One code I'm interested in is GAMESS(US). About a year ago
gfortran could not handle that code, but it can now and details are in
the compile scripts for GAMESS(US). Some benchmarks show it is faster
than ifort on 64 bit machines, but my machines are all 32 bit. I'm
hoping it will be faster there too.

A coworker in the US has compiled the code we are developing called
VB2000 under Cygwin with exactly the same gfortran release as detailed
above. I'm not sure what his hardware is though. I would welcome any
halp with this.
