I'm very much in favor of doing this.  My problems seem to have to do  
with my local installation, not with any issues with the libraries  
themselves,  presumably I'm getting the include file from one version  
and the library file from another version, or something of that kind.   
I'm in the middle of investigating what's the minimal thing that I  
need to do, but this takes time as it involves rebuilding from scratch  
a few times.

A random observation which you might want to take care of in your  
patch if you haven't already is that the error message if mpfr.h is  
not found says "MPFR enabled GMP required".  This will of course not  
be a correct statement with the newer versions of the libraries.
