Jack,

Unless the person committing a patch has an interest in updating
4.1, the patch will probably not make it into 4.1.  OTOH, if
someone (possible you) pull the bits out of trunk, merges the 
patch with 4.1, and tests it.  There is a chance that it may
be committed.

Also note, the gfortran team has been granted some leniency 
to committed non-regression changes to release branches.  At some
point, gfortran will need to toe-the-line.
