Yup, there went my first commit.  I did screw up a little bit --
I forgot the testcase in the first round -- but hopefully I
didn't break anything too badly.

I didn't commit to 4.0, because this patch relies on the patch
for PR 15975.  That patch was never committed to 4.0 because PR
15975 was closed by Andrew with the comment

Should I commit the PR 15975 patch for 4.0, and then this patch, or
just leave it?
