I'd rather break the ABI for 4.1 and have it not broken between
4.1 and 4.2, simply because in 4.0 gfortran was more or less just
an experimental front end anyway so users are more likely to
understand why things would break between 4.0 and 4.1.
But the patch is IMVHO way too large for GCC 4.1 at such a very
late stage like where we are now :-/
