compiling problems

Dear fortran developers,

I recently downloaded the gfortran compiler for Mac OSX Tiger and I  
am having difficulties getting it to compile my programs.

I downloaded the zipped tarball and unzipped it.  I installed it  
using "sudo tar -xvf g95-tiger-bin.tar -C /"  It seemed to unpack the  
tarball, but when I try "gfortran filename", an error message comes  
up saying:  "-bash: gfortran: command not found".  I've also  
installed the developer tools from the disk that came with my  
computer (PowerMac G5 64 bit).

Is there something else I need to do before using the compiler?
