mixing g77 code with C++ and C and ada from gcc 4.X

can anyone think of any reason why it would not be possible to mix
object created
by g77 (3.4.X) with object created by gcc 4.X ?
some work would be needed in makefiles to ensure the correct g77 runtime was
linked in.....
anything else ?
rumors of faster runtime C++ code and a desire to not touch an existing
F77 code
base are what is driving this idea.

p.s. there is some fundamental truth here; like C++ programs can use
more memory and cpu
than can be purchased, but 10 year old fortran can't be made to consume
a noticeable amount
of memory and time.
