SVN question

I am beginning to sort out svn.

Is it true that one can create local branches so that you could work on multiple 
bugs without mixing patches.

I am thinking while I am waiting for review on one patch I could create a branch 
off my trunk and start working that patch separately so that diffs to the svn 
server don't show multiple patches on top of each other.

Is anyone using svn in this way?
