g77 on an iMac

I'm using the Terminal program (unix) on an iMac trying to run g77 
fortran.   I've downloaded FINK, installed it, and used it to download 
g77 with the command "fink install g77".   All seemed to go OK, but 
when I try to compile a small fortran program I get the message:
g77: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory. 
   Can you help?
