gfortran binary file format

Thanks for pointing me to the background. I searched, but used the wrong 
words.

I also recall reading something about 32 bit initial implementation for 
gfortran in  gcc-4.0, and
a record size of 64bit for all targets is counter to that idea. Without 
an option in gfortran
at the current time, the initial implementation, it seems to me,  should 
be for 32bit targets. 
But I may be missing something due my lack of compiler development 
experience.  
In any event I appreciate your input.
