Mixing C and gfortran ...

Hi,
  after a little fiddling I managed all my mixed-language problems with one 
exception: what happens if a field descriptor is passed?
My questions to the group are thus:

- where in the (gfortran) source can I find the data structure for a field 
descriptor, which is pushed on the stack (I saw gfortran represents them 
internally with a tree, but I dont think this is what I find on the stack??)
yes, I disassembled a call in gdb, but my assembler knowledge is umm .. 
rusty..

- is this data structure 'stable' or is it likely to change in the future?

I admit this is more curiosity than need.
