does gfortran backport any g95 code?

Yes, the Cray pointer patch (which includes loc) is basically ready 
to release.  We've sent off the copyright assignments to the FSF. 
Unfortunately, releasing code requires the approval of quite a few 
people, and while we're getting close, it will take at least a couple 
more days before we can submit the patch.
