In trying to come to grips with the front end of gfortran, I came across
the papers for the 2003 and 2004 gcc summits. Maybe these are well known
but I found them to be a mine of information and, I suspect, they will be
useful to others, like me,who are floundering a bit.
http://gcc.fyxm.net/summit/
Of particular interest are:
Paul Brook on gfortran
http://gcc.fyxm.net/summit/2003/Fortran%2095%20Support.pdf, of course,
Jason Merrill on Generic and Gimple
http://gcc.fyxm.net/summit/2003/GENERIC%20and%20GIMPLE.pdf
Diego Novillo on Tree-SSA
http://gcc.fyxm.net/summit/2003/Tree%20SSA%20-%20A%20New%20optimization%20in
frastructure.pdf and again
http://gcc.fyxm.net/summit/2004/Design%20of%20Tree%20SSA.pdf
This latter is highly useful for its description of the options for tree
dumps.
