Mixed language i/o sychronization

Jerry,
    I would also note that the i/o synchronization failures are happening
with GFORTRAN_UNBUFFERED_ALL set to 1 and only on Linux. My builds with
g++ 4.0 from Apple and gcc/gfortran from gcc 4.1 branch don't suffer the
python test failures on MacOS X. I hope to do a build against g++ 4.1
branch as well on MacOS X as soon as a compile problem is resolved (which
may be a regression in the c++ compiler).
