Paul,

I apologise to one and all - this was an ill-conceived attempt to get 
something out in a rush before going on a trip.  I agree perfectly with what 
you say.

The commented out code was an ineffective way of asking the question, 
whether "/" is the same as &end in a  NAMELIST data block?  The standard is 
a bit ambiguous but other compilers treat them as being the same.  I do not 
think that what is in gfortran is correct - it is certainly not practical.
