Internal file READ statement

The attached code generates the following (IMHO misleading) error
message. 
[sfilippo@euler RUNS]$ ./try
At line 8 of file try.f90
Fortran runtime error: No such device

program try
  character(8) :: buffer
  integer       :: i
  
  buffer = '00000010'
  
  read(buffer,*) j
  print *,j
  stop
end program try



Same code works if written as 
read(buffer,'(i8)') j

Bug, feature, user error, ???
