IO library status

Does anyone know how good (or bad) our IO library is?

I'm currently going through updating gfortran.texi, and would like to include 
something on the status of the IO library. I've never really done any work on 
this, so don't have a feel for how complete it is. Even something like 
"Simple things are there, but don't expect any real programs to work" or 
"It's mostly done, just a few bugs need ironing out" would be useful.
