Well, I dont really like it too but I had some problems with libtool 
complaining about the version conflicts. I will see how to solve this 
and use the top level dir again.

I'm concerned about this too and when I'm happy with this patch I will 
send it some people for testing before submitting anything.

Currently I'm not very happy with the patch. I think I will need 
another week for it.
