After a night's sleep, I realize that most likely, my browser was
configured to aggressively try to always use https rather than http.
Don't remember turning that on, and I haven't yet tried to
diable it, but I have to investigate.
Anyway, that aggressive behaviour totally breaks with the virtual
hosting setup at gcc.gnu.org/sourceware.org. Probably nothing easy you
can do about that in your end.
