Actually, if you monitored gcc-patches and the subversion commits for a while, you will realise that that statement is factually wrong. Most of the code comes from individuals that are paid to work in GCC [*] by Red Hat, Google, Sourceware, Suse, Sony, IBM, etc, as it happens in the Linux kernel as well. Moreover, one problem that is mentioned from time to time is the difficulty to attract new volunteer contributors for various reasons.

Since from a false premise anything may be concluded...
