Well first, I apologize for writing my complaint to the list, that was
unintentional, I meant to send email, and certainly did not mean to start
a flame war on this issue. In fact in this particular case I got a nice
message back from the author thanking me for pointing this out, saying
that he did not realize this was happening, and would make sure it
did not happen again. So talk of "immediately have their account banned"
is a bit over fierce. I do agree that there is a significant legal problem
here. All email messages are copyrighted at the point of creation. It may
be argued that posting to a general mailing list like this gives implicit
permission for copying (such as happens when the mailing list is archived,
or mirrored etc). But with a note like this at the end of the message, it
is absolutely clear that no such permission to copy exists, so I think that
anyone causing a backup or archive of the list to be made would definitely
be at some risk of copyright violation, which is most certainly not
acceptable.
