insmod

sir/madam,
i compiled the hello.c module into a hello.o object file. When i try to
insmod that module there is a error message saying that the compiler has
hello.o compiled for the kernel 2.4.0-0.26
while this kernel is version 2.2.16-22.
how do i solve this problem ? the gcc -dumpversion shows 2.96. Do i need an
older version of gcc or specify some option.
