Note that this will cause a minor problem in existing trees. I had to
manually remove etc/ from my objdirs to get the trees to build again. I
don't know if it's worth making the build machinery try to handle this
case, but it has happened a few times this week.
This is trivial for a human, but just enough of a curve to foil a cron
job. :-)
